Maintain eye contact with the audience

Maintaining eye contact with your audience can help convey your confidence, even if you’re nervous. When speaking in front of large groups at meetings or events, make eye contact with a few different people to show your focus on the entire audience. You can also focus on the wall directly behind your audience to help you concentrate.

Speak up

It’s hard to build confidence if you rarely or never speak. So, break this cycle. Try to be bold and speak up. Answering questions in class, talking to your classmates or other. English speakers and joining a language exchange are all good opportunities for you to speak and gain confidence. Build up your own speaking experience in this way by taking more opportunities.

Work on a growth mindset

Growth mindset describes a way of viewing or looking at challenges and setbacks. Some research shows that those with a growth mindset  have higher self-esteem and resilience than those with a fixed mindset. While there is an argument about whether confidence affects a growth mindset or vice versa, building a growth mindset can help with other areas of your life.

Practise self-affirmations

Essentially, by telling yourself about your strengths and how confident you are, you can reinforce these positive thoughts. One particular study demonstrates that self-affirmations can help to maintain our self-efficacy, which is a key component of confidence. Confidence is a skill that is helpful to us in our day to day life.

Accept that it’s OK to be wrong

People with confidence are not afraid to be wrong. Instead, they view being wrong as an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. When they are wrong about something or a mistake has been made, confident people tend to hold themselves accountable and find ways to improve for the future. Accept that everyone, even the most confident of people, can be wrong at times.
